How to Use the Circle of Fifths
The Circle of Fifths arranges all 12 keys by the interval of a perfect fifth. Moving clockwise adds one sharp; moving counter-clockwise adds one flat. Select a key by clicking any note on the outer ring or using the dropdown, then pick a scale or mode to highlight which notes belong to it. Drag the wheel to rotate and explore key relationships.
Notes / Chords — Toggle between showing individual note names on the wheel or the diatonic chords (major, minor, diminished) built on each scale degree.
Standard / Simplified — Standard shows the full wheel with all 12 keys and the diminished chord. Simplified hides non-diatonic segments and the diminished ring, making it easier for beginners to focus on the key's core chords.
Key slider — Drag the slider below the wheel or use the dropdown to change key. The wheel rotates to centre the selected key at the top.
Click to play — Click any note or chord segment on the wheel to hear it. Clicking does not change the key.
Sound button — Plays the selected scale ascending so you can hear what the key sounds like.
